Storage Tips

Pack Smart, Pack Safe!

Preparing for storage is easier when you’re equipped with the right materials. Gather strong boxes, tape, markers, and plenty of padding materials like bubble wrap, towels, or foam noodles. Use uniform box sizes for easy stacking and list the contents of each box on all four sides for quick identification. Avoid overpacking—each box should ideally hold 25-30 pounds to prevent strain and make stacking secure. Take the extra step to list out an inventory of items in your storage unit and keep it at home for quick reference.

Maximize Every Inch!

When it comes to storage, making the most of your space is essential. Start by renting the smallest unit you’ll need and pack it efficiently. Place frequently needed items at the front for easy access and leave a small aisle down the middle to reach items in the back. Stack heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top, and use the drawers in your furniture to store smaller items like knick-knacks and kitchenware. For even more space-saving, stand sofas on end and remove table legs to create a compact arrangement.

Handle with Care.

Some items need a little extra TLC in storage. Avoid placing sharp or heavy items on top of upholstered furniture to prevent damage. Sofas and mattresses should be positioned carefully; standing mattresses upright is fine, but make sure they’re propped up to avoid sagging or warping. Wrap furniture cushions in plastic, cover upholstered furniture, and store stuffed items with cardboard or blankets to protect them from dust and moisture over time.

Keep It Dry and Damage-Free!

Protecting your belongings from moisture and wear is key. Place items on pallets or boards to lift them off potentially damp concrete, and put a protective cover on the floor before you load your things. Wrap delicate items, like glasses and mirrors, in sturdy boxes and mark them “FRAGILE.” For electronics, store them at the back of your unit to keep them secure. Also, use machine oil on metal items to prevent rust and cover upholstered furniture with blankets to guard against dust.

Make Use of What You Have!

Think outside the box by using everyday items as additional storage space. Larger appliances like refrigerators make great packing cases for items such as blankets, towels, and clothes. Empty trash cans are perfect for storing tools like rakes, shovels, and hoses—just stack them neatly to keep everything organized. With these creative tips, you can make storage easy, efficient, and even a little fun!
